Extension and Research Activities

1. Read Susan Mayse’s biography, The Life and Death of Albert Goodwin.

2. Write a short biography of Robert Dunsmuir.

3. Draw and label a diagram that shows the longwall technique before 1905.

4. Research the coal mining industry in B.C. today. List mine locations. output and markets for BC coal.

5. Imagine you were a Workers’ Compensation Board inspector in 1901 and write a safety report on the Cumberland mine.

6. Make up a corporate slogan for Robert Dunsmuir’s mining company.

7. Compare Cumberland today to its heyday nearly 100 years ago. Include references to population, economy, facilities, and transportation.

8. Imagine you are a Chinese worker who is prevented by the Head Tax from bringing your wife and children to Cumberland. Write a letter telling them about the town and the mine.

9. Find a cartoon about Cumberland in the book, Great Canadian Political Cartoons, 1820 to 1914, and comment on its message.

10. Read the second chorus to the mining song Are You from Bevan in the book Songs of the Pacific Northwest by Phillip J. Thomas and describe attempts by Vancouver Island miners to form a union.
