The basic method of hand logging included the following steps:
1. A cross-ribbing of short logs was laid under the tree to be felled.
2. The tree was felled onto the short logs, which acted as skids. The tree’s lower branches prevented it from sliding, or pitching, down the slope.
3. The branches were cut off, beginning at the top.
4. A jack was set and the tree rolled over so the remaining branches could be cut off.
5. If the tree was still stuck, another jack was set under the top end, and carefully raised until the trunk slid down into the water.
