Safety Procedures

To protect workers from falling rocks, the shaft walls and ceiling were scaled, or scraped, of loose debris. Care was given to drill the holes to the correct depth, pack them with explosives and trim the fuses to the right length to ensure the proper order of firing. The miners counted the shots as they exploded; if there was a delay or misfiring, no one was allowed to approach the rock face for 30 minutes.
