Title: Extension and Research Activities

1. Describe the site requirements for a sawmill 100 years ago.

2. Show on the map below, three additional locations suitable for a sawmill. (You will need to refer to an atlas with a physical map of B.C.)

3. Find current statistics for the B.C. lumber industry.
       • number of mills
       • total production (in board feet)
       • annual revenue
       • number of workers

4. Design a training course for greenchain workers. Include information on the length of the course, skills to be taught, safety considerations, and fitness standards.

5. Locate an archival photograph of a working sawmill and write a description of what is shown.

6. Draw a cartoon strip showing either a dangerous or humorous incident on a greenchain.

7. Write a letter of resignation outlining the reasons why you no longer wish to work on the greenchain.

8. Design a poster to be used by companies wanting to recruit greenchain workers.

9. Find out if anyone in your family has worked on a greenchain and, if so, interview that person about his/her experiences.
